Deri asks Council of Torah Sages to step down as Shas chairman

|
Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri will discuss with members of the Council of Torah Sages his desire to resign. He will present them with his request to leave the leadership of the Shas faction and will hear the rabbis' opinions. The Council of Torah Sages wanted to draft a letter stating that Deri would remain in his position, but the letter was ultimately not issued due to disagreements over the wording and the identity of the signatories. The council was expected to convene today, but since Rabbi Avraham Salim is abroad, it is possible that the meeting will be postponed to Friday. Two council members refused to sign a letter of support for Deri together with Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, claiming that a video of the rabbi throwing draft orders into the toilets drove away one hundred thousand votes and brought Shas to collapse.
