Zach Whitaker, son of American envoy Steve Whitaker who mediated negotiations between Israel and Hamas leading to the ceasefire and release of hostages, rejected the claim that the deal was made possible only because of the failed assassination attempt of senior Hamas officials in Qatar last month. On his X account he wrote: "With all due respect, this is not only wrong - it's the opposite. The Israeli attack did not enable progress, and almost cut off months of delicate diplomacy that had already brought the talks to the brink of success. To claim that military escalation somehow 'opened' humanitarian release is to misunderstand both the timeline and the essence of what actually happened."
