Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense hosted a meeting of chiefs of staff, state representatives and a European Union delegation to the country, regarding a Saudi initiative to establish a multinational maritime defense alliance, 'as part of efforts to improve maritime security, protect international waterways, and address threats targeting maritime shipping and global trade.' This was announced by the Saudi Ministry of Defense. The meeting was attended by representatives from 43 countries, and at its conclusion the alliance was announced. Member states include: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia.
