Earlier, a column of tanks and armored personnel carriers parked near one of Gaza’s major settlements. IDF Southern Command officers said some of the vehicles were in the Strip earlier and were brought to the area following persistent mortar shell barrages directed at Gush Katif several weeks ago.
However, other vehicles were brought in specifically for the disengagement, the army said.
Army sources also said the boosted presence in Gaza is meant to ensure the upcoming withdrawal would not be carried out under fire. The officials said the army must prepare to secure Israeli citizens, even though the Palestinian Authority also pledged to prevent attacks.
The officials said the plans were formulated in advance in preparation for the possibility of a pullout under fire. However, the army refused to say whether more forces would be sent to the Strip before the pullout gets under way, on August 15.
