The IDF said on Wednesday that a senior Hizbullah
commander was killed just hours before a ceasefire took effect this week between Israel andthe Lebanese terror group.
Soldiers killed Sajed Dewayer, head of Hizbullah's Special Forces, during a massive Air Force strike on the Dahiya district in south Beirut.
The IDF said Dewayer was behind numerous attacks on Israeli soldiers, including kidnapping operations. According to military officials, Dewayer is believed to be one of those responsible for the kidnapping of IDF soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev.
The aerial attack took place last Sunday at 3 p.m.; more than 20 blasts rocked Beirut within a two-minute span; Lebanese military officials said 11 apartment buildings were destroyed, but the area was empty of residents during the attack.
Arab media outlets said the IAF attack targeted residential buildings near the Imam Hassan mosque, which is located in the neighborhood of el-Rawis in a south Beirut suburb.
Al-Jazeera reported that no senior Hizbullah members were hurt in the attack.
Hizbullah released a statement a short while later saying the building attacked did not contain Hizbullah offices and that no terror group members were injured.
“This attack was an attempt by the enemy to compensate for its failure to achieve its goals in the war,” the statement said.
