Al-Sayed to back one of Israel's most vocal critics for Democratic Senate leadership

Senator-elect Abdul al-Sayed of Michigan announced he will back the candidacy of Sen. Chris Van Hollen — one of Israel's most prominent critics in Congress — over Jewish Sen. Chuck Schumer for Democratic Senate leadership. During his campaign, al-Sayed declared: "If you're Chuck Schumer, I'm very dangerous to you," adding that he also poses a threat to the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC. Schumer, one of the most senior Jewish politicians in the U.S., is expected to run for another term as party leader, but several newly elected Democratic senators have already announced they will not support him.
