On the eve of Benjamin Netanyahu's visitto Washington for talks with President Barack Obama, some members of his ruling Likud party have expressed fears that the prime minister may succumb to US pressure and accept the two-state proposal.
"Netanyahu told me that I can be calm, but I fear that he may break," Knesset Member Danny Danon told Ynet Saturday night. "We are still trapped in the trauma of (former Prime Minister) Arik Sharon ,but the current situation is different."
Danon sent Netanyahu a letter over the weekend urging the PM not to adopt the two-state initiative, and on Wednesday he organized a meeting of MKs fromLikud and other right-wing factions, during which some of the participants called for a political and public campaign against the US-backed plan.
The majority of Likud members, including ministers Moshe Yaalon, Benny Begin and Yisrael Katz are against the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
A number of Likud MKs said they would "rebel" against Netanyahu should he change his stance and agree to enter negotiations on the establishment of a Palestinian state, as was the case when former PM Sharon decided to unilaterally withdraw fromGaza and parts of the West Bank in 2005.
