In Germany, investigators are examining whether August Hanning, the former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) who was arrested on suspicion of espionage and treason, had connections with an Azerbaijani agent. This is according to information obtained by the German newspaper Der Spiegel. The investigation revealed that Hanning allegedly obtained documents classified as "secret" through his former chief of staff at the BND and used them to compile a written analysis. According to the federal prosecutor's office, this analysis was intended for "an employee of a foreign intelligence and security apparatus." Investigative authorities did not disclose which country that individual served. According to Der Spiegel, the alleged client for the work was an Azerbaijani intelligence operative.
