Basil Salam, 34, the son of Nazareth Deputy Mayor Ali Salam, was arrested overnight Sunday on suspicion of murdering his 33-year-old wife Hala. The motive remains unclear at this point.
At around 3:30 am police received a report of a shooting in the city's Jabel Doli neighborhood. Officers who were dispatched to the couple's home found the woman's body.
Commander Avi Elgrisi, head of the Amakim Police's Central Unit, told Ynet that a gun was also found at the scene.
"It is safe to assume that this was the gun used to carry out the murder," he said, adding that the suspect did not have a license to carry a firearm.
Police said the woman had not filed any domestic violence complaints. The couple had three children.
