While the United States, the United Nations and Europe expressed disappointment over the resumption of construction in the settlements, Opposition Chairwoman MK Tzipi Livni onMonday phoned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu andwarned him of Israel 'stroublesome position, adding that his main goal should be to renew negotiations and prevent their failure.
"You must make the necessary decisions in order to maintain the negotiations, and Kadima will support any decision that will achieve this goal," Livni told Netanyahu.
The opposition leader also noted that she has abstained from publicly criticizing the government, in order to allow the prime minister to fully explore all the possibilities to renew negotiations.
However, Livni stressed that if Netanyahu's actions prompt the collapse of talks, Kadima will act accordingly. "Kadima will keep enabling the prime minister to make the right and necessary decisions for the continuation of talks, but will oppose any measure that thwarts negotiations and risks their future."
Earlier, Minister of Improvement of Government Services Michael Eitan (Likud) said that the State of Israel was in "a critical point," and called for Kadima to be joined to the coalition.
In an article published on Eitan's internet website, the minister wrote that due to the concessions Israel was compelled to make on the political level, the government's basis must be broadened.
In response, Kadima officials said the party will join the government if Netanyahu shows serious intent to reach a comprehensive peace agreement.
