The US Treasury Department imposed economic sanctions on Alexandre de Moraes, a judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil who is handling the case against former President Jair Bolsonaro. "He used his position of power to authorize arbitrary pre-trial detentions and suppressed freedom of expression," the Treasury Department statement said. Bolsonaro is accused of taking part in an attempted coup in 2022 after losing the election to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
