Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called President Shimon Peres on Wednesday to extend his condolences for the death of his wife, Sonya .
Abbas and Peres also discussed the Palestinian documents leaked recently to the al-Jazeera network and the Guardian newspaper. He told the president that the leaders must guard against attempts to "murder" the peace process.
The documents attest to large concessions in core issues made by the Palestinian Authority in peace negotiations. Criticism was subsequently launched at leaders regarding the gap between their professed stance and the revealed information.
Abbas and other leaders have rejected the reports and accused Al-Jazeera of plotting against the Palestinian government.
Peres told Abbas he appreciates his "strong stance against attempts at provocation and de-legitimization of a Palestinian state and the peace process".
"We must stand as a fortress before these attempts, you and us together," Abbas answered.
A former aide to the late Yasser Arafat, Abbas's predecessor, has claimed that the documents are reliable and called the Palestinian Authority "treacherous".
"There needs to be an investigation against those who betrayed the Palestinian people's rights, took the liberty to negotiate about east Jerusalem, and agreed to Israeli annexation of the Jewish neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city," said Bassam Abu Sharif on Monday.
Abu Sharif, whose relations with the Fatah havedeteriorated since Arafat's death, is known as a critic of the current PA leadership. He described the leaders as weak and obsequious collaborators with Israel "against the Palestinians' national interests".
