Paratroopers caught with alcohol, jailed

Alcoholic beverages found in room of five combat soldiers serving near Gaza

Five soldiers belonging to the Paratroopers Brigade were sentenced to 20 days in a military detention center on Monday after bottles of alcohol were found in their room.
The soldiers, who serve in an IDF outpost near the Gaza Strip, were caught with the bottles by their commander on Sunday. It remains unclear whether they will continue to serve in combat roles after their release.
The IDF has recently waged a war on alcohol consumption among soldiers, in the framework of which undercover and regular Military Police officers patrol entertainment hubs frequented by IDF troops. Israel Police also reports soldiers who get intoxicated while on leave to the army.
The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said the soldiers who were sent to jail were not drunk at the time the alcoholic beverages were found in their room.
