The police arrested Wednesday a Sudanese citizen in his 20s on suspicion that he broke into an apartment in south Tel Aviv two weeks ago and raped the female tenant.
The arrest followed a DNA testing at the scene of the rape, which matched the suspect's genetic profile.
According to initial investigation, the woman, who lived on her own in the apartment in Hatikva neighborhood, was sleeping when the suspect broke in through the window, and raped her while covering her face with a pillow, so that she would not be able to see him.
He then stole money from the apartment and fled the scene.
The petrified woman called the police and reported the incident. Forensic units collected findings, which led to the identification of the suspect.
The recent incident comes on the heels of a string of violent events in south Tel Aviv involving neighborhood residents and African refugees.
Last week, a Molotov cocktail washurled at an apartment housing refugees. No injuries were reported. Two weeks ago, a similar incident occurredwhen four firebombs were hurled at foreign workers in Shapira neighborhood.
On Tuesday, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu toregulate the status of refugees and foreign workers. "The government of Israel must make immediate decision before it's too late," he said.
