Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Kadima Chairman Shaul Mofaz on Thursday to discuss an alternative to the Tal Law, which will expire on August 1. The two met privately at Netanyahu's chambers in Jerusalem and tried to reach a compromise on the haredi draft issue.

Kadima MK Yohanan Plesner told his associates, "The matter is ready for Netanyahu's decision. There is no point in wasting more time in futile meetings. They would have voluntary conscription by the age of 26 followed by a sweeping exemption. We advocate enlistment by the age of 22 with service duty. Whoever does not serve after 22 and is not eligible for an exemption will face sanctions."
Earlier, Mofaz's associates said that Minister Moshe Ya'alon's attempt "to law the matter on Plesner is ridiculous." They suggested that Ya'alon expects that Barak will resign allowing him to take over the defense portfolio.
Source at the Likud said that a meeting scheduled to take place at 9:30 pm between Ya'alon and Plesner was canceled 20 minutes before it was meant to begin.
Ya'alon's associates accused Kadima of not negotiating a settlement in good faith.
