Criticism over appointment of Antiquities Authority director: 'Feels like she was chosen because of the minister'

|
Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu announced this week his selection of Esti Shreiber for the position of director of the Israel Antiquities Authority. The ministry stated that the minister's decision was made following a thorough and comprehensive process conducted by a search committee that reviewed dozens of candidates for the position. However, archaeologists expressed surprise that the incoming director lacks sufficient experience in the field of archaeology. Prof. Aren Maeir from the Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology at Bar-Ilan University addressed the appointment in an interview with Ynet Studio: "The problem here is that there is concern she is not suitable for the position and that she was chosen not for objective professional reasons without bias. I am not privy to the protocols, but my feeling is that the candidate was chosen because she is more suited to the agenda of the Heritage Minister."
