The National Cyber Directorate has warned retail chains, food companies and logistics centers in Israel that they must 'immediately protect themselves against takeover of cooling systems,' as part of cyberattacks targeting refrigeration and freezing systems through internet-connected controllers. The warning was issued following an unusual wave of attacks in Europe, during which attackers successfully took remote control of temperature control systems in supermarkets, altered cooling settings and caused the spoilage of large quantities of food. The attacks caused severe economic damage, disruptions to retail chain operations and in some cases even equipment damage and fires.
