Russia: Party opposing Ukraine war barred from parliamentary elections

|
Russia's Supreme Court has banned the liberal Yabloko party from running in September's parliamentary elections. Among Russian parties, Yabloko is the only one that opposes the war in Ukraine and calls for its end from a pacifist perspective. "Excluding Yabloko from the elections means refusing dialogue with people who raise questions that are inconvenient for the authorities," said party leader Nikolai Rybakov, who promised to appeal the decision. The petition against Yabloko was filed by the nationalist Rodina (Motherland) party, which claimed that Yabloko received "unreported support," including from "Western sources."
