The U.S. State Department has approved the sale of 10,000 APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) weapon systems and related equipment to Israel and Qatar, valued at an estimated $992.4 million each. The technology is mounted on standard unguided rockets, upgrading them to precision weapons based on laser guidance designed to strike point targets. Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined that an emergency situation exists requiring the immediate execution of the transaction for U.S. national security, a move that exempts the administration from standard congressional approval processes. In a separate deal, the sale of Patriot missiles and related equipment to Qatar was also approved, valued at an estimated $4.01 billion.
