The Knesset plenum approved in a first reading the 'Prohibition of Kashrut Fraud' bill, which effectively overturns the reform of former Knesset member Matan Kahana, under which supervision services and kosher certification could also be provided by private kashrut bodies. The 'Prohibition of Kashrut Fraud' bill, which was introduced at the request of Shas, will stipulate that the authority to issue kosher certificates will be in the hands of the Chief Rabbinate Council of Israel, local rabbis authorized to do so and the military rabbinate.
