FIFA, which represents 211 football associations worldwide, is examining the impact of expanding the World Cup from 48 to 64 teams ahead of the 2030 tournament. This emerges from a document obtained by Reuters news agency. "FIFA is interested in appointing an independent agency to determine if and how expanding the World Cup from 48 to 64 participating national teams, starting with the 2030 edition, will affect the tournament's characteristics," the document states. A similar report was also published on the American network ESPN, which noted that FIFA is discussing the possibility of expanding the tournament and has begun a consultation process. The 2030 World Cup will be held concurrently in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
