The Health Ministry has updated its recommendations to the public following the outbreak of the Naegleria fowleri amoeba. The ministry noted that this is a very rare but severe and life-threatening disease. Infection occurs when water containing the amoeba enters through the nose, from which it can reach the brain. The disease cannot be contracted by drinking water and does not spread from person to person. The recommendations: When swimming in the Sea of Galilee, minimize water entering the nose as much as possible; use an appropriate nose clip; avoid diving, jumping into the water and putting the head underwater as much as possible; and avoid activities where water enters the nose under pressure.
