Knesset rejects Smotrich's order to exempt packages up to $150 from import tax

The order to exempt packages up to $150 from import tax, submitted by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, failed in a plenum vote with only 25 MKs voting in favor and 59 against. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a free vote for the coalition, whose members opposed the order or did not attend the vote. The declaration of a free vote was intended to prevent a situation in which Netanyahu would suffer a defeat under coalition discipline.
