Following opposition from United States President Donald Trump, Britain is suspending its plan to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The government will not bring forward the required legislation, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office said London will try to persuade Washington to formally support the move. Diego Garcia, an island in the Chagos Archipelago, houses the British-American base considered strategic, from which attacks were launched in the past in Vietnam, Afghanistan and also against the Houthis in Yemen. Starmer signed the transfer last year, but the move requires parliamentary approval. Sources in Starmer's government told the British Telegraph that London is still committed to the move and they will try to bring the legislation forward again next year if the dispute with Trump is resolved.
