A French appeals court canceled an arrest warrant against former Syrian President Bashar Assad for involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity during the civil war that spread throughout the country. This was reported by the British Guardian, which noted that the arrest warrant was issued in November 2023 in response to two chemical attacks using sarin gas in Syria. The court ruled that the warrant is illegal, as international law grants sitting heads of state immunity from prosecution in foreign courts. The judges ruled that their decision allows for issuing a new arrest warrant, as Assad has not been in office since December 2024.
