"He is reborn and back to life," said his wife. "It is so wonderful, the kids have their dad back. He has recovered from the virus and so did we all. It's such good news."
The man, who did not suffer from any underlying health concerns, was hospitalized 29 days ago in serious condition. On March 25, he was connected to an ECMO life support machine, with his condition stabilizing.
He has now been taken off the cardiac and respiratory support machine and is able to communicate with his surroundings. His wife, who has also recovered from the virus, was at his side.
Dr. Haggai Dekel, director of the hospital's cardiac surgery department and the head of the ECMO unit at the hospital said: "We are very glad that we've managed to use all the information and experience we had collected over the span of this epidemic to save those lives."
Dr. Aryeh Sorokski, head of the hospital's ICU, said that he was very glad that the patient could now breathe on his own and communicate with his surroundings, and thanked the ICU's medical team for their hard work.
