Iran and Russia are conducting contacts regarding a deal to supply advanced air defense systems to Tehran, according to a report in The Telegraph. An Iranian official told the newspaper that the Islamic Republic is 'optimistic' about the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin will supply it with S-400 air defense systems, which it has been requesting for years. According to the report, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei yesterday sent Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security, to the Kremlin carrying a personal letter. According to the Iranian official, the main demand in the letter was the supply of the weapons system. The renewed request to receive S-400 systems is a central component of Iran's defense policy, after American and Israeli strikes destroyed its air defense systems.
