Jerusalem succeeded in thwarting a move in Brussels to impose sanctions on Israel - following the fighting in the Gaza Strip - which did not materialize into a decision, after several central countries in the European Union expressed opposition to the move. Spain, Ireland, Malta and Slovenia led the initiative to implement measures, including suspending the "Association Agreement" between Israel and the Union, but they were opposed by Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Lithuania, Greece and other countries.
