Italy banned OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, the Independent reported on Friday, citing privacy concerns as the reason for the blocking.
According to the report, Italian officials said the system "does not have a proper legal basis to be collecting personal information about the people using it."
That data is collected to help train the algorithm that powers ChatGPT’s answers.
Italy became the first country to crack down on artificial intelligence systems amid fears that rushed development of advanced AI tools could entail risks unaccounted for by creators.
