Vandals sprayed graffiti on a memorial to Capt. Omri Tal, an Israeli officer killed during the 2014 Gaza war, prompting outrage from his family and local residents.
Tal’s mother, Esti, said she was devastated when photos of the vandalism were sent to her. “I felt like I died at that moment,” she said. “The very thought that someone allows themselves to deface a memorial honoring those who gave their lives for the country is inconceivable.”

Graffiti sprayed across the memorial honoring Capt. Omri Tal, who was killed during the 2014 Gaza war, before municipal workers removed the vandalism
Residents who noticed the graffiti alerted the Yehud-Monosson municipality, while volunteers organized to clean the site. The city said the graffiti was removed immediately after the report was received.
“I can’t bring myself to go see what they did there,” Tal’s mother said. “It’s as if they hurt Omri. This memorial was built in honor of my son, and it hurts me.”
She said the pain was not about the words sprayed on the memorial but the desecration of a place honoring fallen soldiers.
“It represents the salt of the earth, the best people we had here, who gave their lives so these people could spray graffiti,” she said. “It is a very sad reality.”
Tal said she believes the vandalism reflects a broader erosion of values among young people. “We are only in the first week of summer vacation. Violence has become acceptable,” she said. “I think young children have no boundaries and cannot distinguish between good and bad.”
She said the vandals also sprayed the sign bearing her son’s details and the story of his death. “I’m frozen by this,” she said. “I never could have imagined they would vandalize the memorial.”
Capt. Omri Tal served in the Golani Brigade and later, during his career service, was attached to the 188th Armored Brigade as a professional officer in the 53rd Battalion.
During Operation Protective Edge, Israel’s 2014 war in Gaza, Tal was critically wounded by a mortar shell on July 31, 2014, as he and his soldiers prepared to board armored personnel carriers on their way to staging areas after days of fighting in the Gaza Strip. He was killed at age 22 and 10 months and was posthumously promoted to captain.
The Yehud-Monosson municipality said a crew was sent to remove the graffiti after the family contacted the city hotline.
“We identify with the distress felt by the Tal family and regret that there are those who do not know how to respect fallen IDF soldiers and their commemoration,” the city said.
