40 Democratic and independent senators voted in favor of blocking American-made bulldozer shipments to Israel, in what is described as the broadest expression of opposition to military aid to Israel in Congress to date - but the proposal was rejected after 59 voted against it. The vote was held as part of an initiative led by Senator Bernie Sanders, designed to signal opposition to the policies of the Donald Trump administration and the continuation of traditional American support for Israel. Only seven Democrats opposed the move, including Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. At the same time, Sanders is advancing another bill to ban the transfer of one-ton bombs to Israel, which will come up for a vote later.
