According to Burke: "Washington is concerned about al-Sharaa's safety, as his efforts to promote inclusive governance and establish ties with the West may make him a target for assassination by extremists." Burke added that "we hope there will be a quiet understanding between al-Sharaa and Israel that military confrontation now would be terrible for both. I am confident that our interests and al-Sharaa's are identical. He is smart and confident in what he is doing."
