At least eight Buddhist monks were killed in a severe traffic accident in northeastern Thailand after an 11-year-old boy driving his parents' pickup truck struck a group of monks walking as part of a pilgrimage. Authorities in the country reported the incident. The accident occurred in Mukdahan province near the Laos border, about 600 kilometers from the capital Bangkok. According to authorities, 35 monks and five lay companions were walking along a road in the area as part of a religious procession when the vehicle veered off course and hit them about half an hour after the walk began. Security camera footage near the scene shows the monks walking in single file along the side of the road before the pickup arrives and strikes the group. The boy was taken to the police station and will be questioned in the presence of child welfare and protection officials.
