Iranian authorities announced that a man convicted of raping and murdering a girl in the northwestern province of West Azerbaijan has been executed by hanging. According to the provincial prosecutor, the execution was carried out publicly at dawn, "at the request of the family and residents, and due to the emotional impact of the case on society." Human rights organizations reported that Iran is the second country in the world in the number of executions, after China.
