European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas announced that more than 10 member states are interested in contributing resources and personnel to a new military and civilian mission to advise and train Lebanese forces. The mission is designed to strengthen internal security forces in Beirut and assist in freeing up the Lebanese army so it can focus on disarming Hezbollah. Discussions about the potential EU mission are taking place as UNIFIL's mandate, the UN peacekeeping force on the Lebanese border, is set to expire at the end of 2026.
