IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has recommended two candidates to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the position of military secretary: Brig. Gen. Tal Politis and Brig. Gen. Barak Hiram. Over the past two years, the position has been held by Roman Gofman, whom Netanyahu appointed as head of the Mossad. Netanyahu has begun interviewing candidates for the role in recent days. Hiram most recently served as commander of the Gaza Division, and his appointment to that position was controversial. During the fighting on October 7, he was forced to make fateful decisions within moments, such as during the breach of 'Pesi's house,' where Pesi Cohen and her family members who were visiting her for Simchat Torah were killed. The IDF investigation into the incident cited several tactical errors in decisions Hiram made amid the chaotic situation. Politis served until last month as chief of staff of the Navy.
