At a rabbinical gathering led by senior Lithuanian rabbis, a unified position was presented against enlistment in programs for ultra-Orthodox that do not include wearing uniforms. In a letter presented at the gathering, Lithuanian leader Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch wrote: "All these tracks are an integral part of the army. Anyone who goes there submits himself to the control and authority of military rule and becomes like any other soldier, and there is no aspect of permission in this at all." Leader Rabbi Dov Lando added in his own handwriting: "Besides the disaster he brings upon himself and his household, others may be drawn after him and his iniquity is too great to bear."
