Security Cabinet decides to 'destroy' Hamas and Islamic Jihad

The Prime Minister's Office announced at the end of the security cabinet meeting that "a series of operational decisions were made whose purpose is to bring about the destruction of the military and governmental capabilities of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, in a way that will negate their ability and desire to threaten and harm the citizens of Israel for many years." Netanyahu said at the end of the debate: "We are embarking on a long and difficult war. The war was forced upon us by a murderous attack by Hamas. The first phase ends at this hour with the destruction of the majority of the enemy forces that penetrated our territory. At the same time, we started the offensive and it will continue without reservation and without respite until the goals are achieved. We will restore security to the citizens of Israel and we will win." The cabinet also decided to stop the supply of electricity, fuel and goods to Gaza. (Itamar Eichner)
