The IDF acknowledged on Monday possessing white phosphorus smoke shells but denied using them for offensive purposes following reports claiming otherwise.
"Like many Western armies, the IDF possesses white phosphorus smoke shells, which are legal under international law. Their use is influenced by operational considerations and availability compared to alternatives,” the army said.
“These shells in the IDF are intended for smokescreens, not for attack or ignition purposes, and are not classified as incendiary weapons under the law."
Earlier, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said, "Washington is concerned about reports" that Israel used U.S.-made white phosphorus shells in an October attack in southern Lebanon. (Yoav Zitun)
