Germany to recognize Bucharest as an 'open ghetto' during WWII

|
The German government announced on Friday that it will recognize the Romanian capital Bucharest as an "open ghetto" during World War II.
Following the move, some 3,000 Holocaust survivors living in Israel, and an estimated 2,000 widows, widowers and heirs, will be entitled to a social benefit and retroactive payments from the German government, including more than 1,200 Holocaust survivors from Bucharest who immigrated to Israel after October 1, 1953, and were not so far entitled to the grant.
In addition, they will be entitled to compensation from the Claims Conference for their persecution to the tune of 620 euros per month, and additions provided for in the Holocaust Survivors' Benefits Law, subject to the social status of the survivors.
