Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in Warsaw for what was intended to be the largest protest by the liberal opposition against what it says is the growing erosion of Polish democracy. The demonstration, called the "Freedom March" by its organizers, is being held in the shadow of a new law that opponents of the government claim is designed to remove the leader of the opposition, Donald Tusk, from political life. It is considered the first test of strength for the government's opponents ahead of the elections to be held this fall. The municipality of Warsaw reported that half a million Poles participated in the demonstration. The protest took place on the 34th anniversary of Poland's first postwar democratic election.
