Ministerial Committee Approves Proposal to Split Attorney General Role

|
The Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved for preliminary reading a bill to split the position of Attorney General. The bill, proposed by MK Michel Buskila, is based on the framework developed by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar during his tenure as Justice Minister. According to the proposal, there is 'a problem of power concentration and inherent conflict of interest, whereby the person who advises the government and its ministers is also authorized to investigate them and prosecute them criminally.' Minutes before the approval, the Attorney General announced her opposition to the move.
