Jerusalem mayor at Shira Banki memorial: 'Inability to accept those different from us could bring another disaster'

At an event in Zion Square commemorating Shira Banki, who was murdered by an ultra-Orthodox extremist at the 2015 Pride Parade, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion said that "on Tisha B'Av we mourn the destruction of Jerusalem, which was decreed upon us partly because of baseless hatred. This is a day of soul-searching that reminds us how destructive polarization, divisiveness and intolerance can be. Baseless hatred killed Shira, a 15-year-old girl, simply because she was a symbol of love and tolerance. The inability to accept those who differ from us in their opinions or beliefs, the lack of empathy and mutual responsibility – these are societal illnesses that could bring another disaster upon us."
