US: AIPAC-backed candidate loses California congressional race

|
California state Senator Aisha Wahab officially won the congressional race in the state's 14th district, defeating moderate Melissa Hernandez with a result of 53% to 47%. Hernandez enjoyed support of more than $2.5 million from the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC, which succeeded in significantly narrowing the gap between the two candidates but could not prevent her defeat. Wahab, who will become the first Afghan American in the House of Representatives, raised concerns among parts of the Jewish community due to her positions on Israel. She accused Israel of genocide in Gaza and expressed support for halting U.S. military aid, but emphasizes that she recognizes Israel's right to exist and opposes antisemitism, and received support from the liberal pro-Israel lobby J Street.
