Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the arrests of ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers. He said: "Yeshiva heads tell me, 'When you send people into the yeshivas, remove Torah students and take them to jail – no one will enlist.' This achieves the opposite result." It should be noted that no such arrest cases are known to have occurred, and even the hesder yeshivas in their letter to Netanyahu did not make such a claim. Netanyahu added: "If I told you that in Europe young people are taken to jail, you would be shocked." He qualified that "anyone who is not studying Torah can have the full weight of the law applied to them, including arrest."
