At least 14 people were killed and seven others injured in the collapse of an unlicensed gold mine in the Nariño department in southwestern Colombia. Local authorities announced that search and rescue operations have ended. The department's governor, Luis Alfonso Escobar, said that "entire families perished in the tragic disaster." The mine is located in an isolated area surrounded by rainforest, accessible only by boat or small aircraft. Armed rebel groups also operate in the area and were asked to allow rescue forces to reach the site.
