Eisenkot: 'Draft evasion law will dismantle the people's army'

|
Former IDF Chief of Staff and Knesset member Gadi Eisenkot criticized the advancement of the draft evasion law during a discussion in the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. "This law will not be a historic law but a historic mistake that will endanger Israel's security," he said. "On October 7, everything changed, there is a strategic turning point here. The scale of forces needed in the coming years is different from what was required in the last 50 years. We will be in an emergency routine for many years in the foreseeable future, and the draft evasion law will dismantle the people's army. If there isn't a serious law that provides an answer, it will be difficult to impossible to repair the damage it will cause to those who do serve. The fact that today only 48% of 18-year-olds serve, and a further decrease will bring this to places where it will be impossible to maintain the people's army."
