Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that he intends to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September.
Carney told reporters, adding that recognition is contingent on the Palestinian Authority committing to structural reforms, including changes in governance and holding general elections in 2026 - in which Hamas will not be able to participate. Carney noted that he spoke with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
