IDF Chief instructs to examine law change - recognition as IDF fallen soldiers for those who died outside service

|
Amid protests over the non-recognition of reserve soldier Roy Vassershtein, who took his own life, as an IDF fallen soldier, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has instructed to examine the possibility of legislative change. This would grant the IDF authority to approve, in unique cases, recognition for reserve soldiers who died while not on active military service, if a direct connection is found between their death and their military service. According to current law, an IDF fallen soldier is defined as someone who fell during regular service or active reserve duty. Vassershtein completed his last reserve service in May, in an evacuation unit in the 401st Brigade. Those close to him reported that he shared difficult experiences from his service.
