Helena Foulkes defeated Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee, who became the first sitting governor in the U.S. to lose a primary since 2018. Pro-Palestinian Democratic Socialist David Morales (27), who was backed by Bernie Sanders, won the primary for mayor of Providence, Rhode Island's capital, unseating incumbent Mayor Brett Smiley. Morales supports a referendum to be held in November on divesting investments tied to Israel, and if approved, Providence would become the largest city in the U.S. to approve such a move through the ballot box. Smiley, an openly gay man who converted to Judaism in 2024, is a supporter of Israel who opposed the initiative.
